At twenty-eight employees, Lamco is one of the largest firms in Indianapolis specializing in finishing services for the graphic arts industry. The company was started in 1973, sold in the late 80s, and sold again to the current owners in 1994.
“When we bought the company in 1994, it was just laminating and awards,” says Jim Vivian, “In 1998, we bought a book bindery and subsequently sold the awards part of the business in 2002. That’s how the business got to where it is today.”
Today, Lamco’s quality products include menus, loose-leaf binders, index tabs, point of purchase displays, book covers, funeral books, marriage certificate holders, and hymnals - to name a few. “Our customers are typically printers, marketing departments of manufacturers, and ad agencies,” adds Vivian.
In 2003, the company was at a crossroads in terms of financing the company. “We had some mezzanine financing that was coming due and with that, there was a balloon payment,” says Vivian. “We also had a couple of short-term loans that were almost up and we wanted to change their terms. We basically wanted to refinance it all with one lender.”
A friend heard that Jim was considering re-financing his business and highly recommended that he partner with Milestone Advisors to put his best foot forward when approaching banks. “Milestone put together the whole financing package for us,” says Vivian. “They gathered and analyzed our historical financial information, put together the financial projections, and then brought it all together in a presentation for the banks”.
Lamco also benefited from Milestone’s strong relationships with banks in the Indianapolis area. “They arranged presentations with the lenders and they went along with us to make the presentations,” says Vivian.
With Milestone’s help, Lamco refinanced their business and paid off a subordinated lender early. “Milestone enabled me to present my business in a way that resulted in the best deal possible - which lowered our monthly debt service,” says Vivian. The bottom line result is a significant savings in annual interest.
